Early Tennessee route logs

These 1923 and 1926 (?) logs come from annual reports of the Tennessee Department of Highways.

1923

Under the provisions of Chapter 74 of the Public Acts of 1917 the Department is authorized to lay out and establish a system of inter-county or State Highways. Further, the Federal Aid Road Act required that the State Highway Department in co-operation with the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, establish a Federal Aid Highway system upon which Federal Aid may be expended. It was provided that this system should not include more than seven per cent of the public road mileage of the State.

Acting under the authority of these laws a system of Federal and State Aid Highways have been established. The Federal Aid system was approved by the Secretary of Agriculture on October 1, 1923 and the system of State Highways was approved as an addition to the system of Federal Aid Highways by the Commissioner on the same date.

The roads on the State Highway system are designated by their control points, these being considered as fixed points whose location, geographically or topographically, determine the location of the highway. The roads are designated by route numbers, these being used by the Department for convenience. Markers bearing these numbers are being erected or painted along the roads throughout the State.

The description of the approved State Highway system which includes the Federal Aid highways and the State Aid highways is as follows:

SUMMARY OF MILEAGE

1926 (as best as I can tell)

Authority for establishing a State Highway System is given to the Department by the provisions of Chapter 74 of the Public Acts of 1917. In these provisions the Department is authorized to lay out and establish a system of State highways. Certain roads of the State Highway System have been designated to receive Federal Aid under the provisions of the Federal Aid Act of 1916. Under the provisions of this Act not more than seven per cent of the State Highway System can receive Federal Aid.

Pursuant to the authority of these laws, a State Highway System has been established. Federal Aid is used only on the Trunk Line routes of the System. The roads of the State Highway System are designated by their control points, these being considered as fixed points whose location geographically or topographically determine the general location of the highway. All roads are designated by route numbers. These numbers are necessary for convenience to the traveler, as well as to the Department in designating the various routes for the purpose of administration. Markers bearing these numbers are erected or painted along the roads throughout the State. The numbers along the routes correspond to the numbers shown on all maps published by the Department showing the State Highway System. The mileage of each route on the State Highway System, classified by type, is shown in Table No. 2 of the Appendix.

A description of the approved State Highway System, giving control points, follows:

The existing State Highway System, comprising approximately ten per cent of public road mileage of the State, is made up of the most important interstate and intercounty roads within the State. Constant demands are being made by county organizations that additional highway mileage be added to the State System. Without a definite limit to the State Highway System sound economic development cannot be carried on.
